oDesk (UpWork) is a freelance marketplace where freelancer submit their resume and portfolio. Here buyers look for ideal freelancer to assist with different type of task and paid by the hour or by fixed-price bids. There are a lot of jobs on oDesk (UpWork) from entry level to expert level.
Every buyer always want talented, experienced, and knowledgeable freelancers . So it is very difficult to get job for a newbie. I know that. I read many articles and visit many forum before my first bid on oDesk. There are many odesker bid day after day but they dont get any job. Because they started their bid just after signup. Buyer don’t hire them because they have no work records and they do not show nothing on their portfolio.
So I took decision that I will first bid on oDesk after complete my oDesk profile. I was not wrong. I have registered on oDesk befor six month but not create my oDsek profile. I have got my first oDesk job after 8 days after completed my oDesk profile. I applied on only 12 jobs. I think it is too quick for a newbie freelancer. Here I will share my experience to get first oDesk job.
oDesk Test Must:
Never bid after just signup!! At first you must attend and pass oDesk Readiness test. Then sit for several free oDesk test relevant your skill. Try to be get good marks on every test. These test increase your chance to get job. When buyer see your test reault he think that though you are newbie on oDesk, you have sound knowledge on relevant fields.
Edit Your Profile:
Personal profile is like a heart of every freelancer. Give yourself a title that best describes what you do. For the sample you can see other successful oDesker’s profile. Add your skill. Here you can add your past experience, you job experience, job responsibilities so that buyer can easily measure you.
You need to add your educational records. If you completed any professional course relevant your skill you should write down that. First impression of profile is most important. Try to fill every field and give true information.
Create Your Portfolio:
Portfolio is another must do thing. You must add your previous work list with image or pdf. Always use active web link for every project. Add at least six portfolio. Buyer can get a clean idea about your work from your portfolio.
Its Time to Bid:
After completed your full profile, you are ready to war. It is the most hardest part of a freelancer life. Choose job that are best suited for you. It is very important to read the full job description before you decide to apply for it.
I think that new user should bid on fixed price and low budget job initially. Try to bid as soon as possible after job posting by buyer. Its give you an extra benefit. Offer the most reasonable price for your services, but never bid below what you are worth. Because good buyer usually deny the lowest bidders.
Write Cover Letter:
Write a attractive cover letter before submit your application. Write at least two point that buyer has written in the job opening description. Put some of your previous work list as relevant to what the job demands. A good cover letter brings your dream comes true.
Commutation is a vital role for every freelancer. Try to response very quickly. Check your mail and notification regularly. Use all of the major communication methods such as yahoo messenger, google talk, AIM, skype. Because the buyer can reach you easily when they need.
Try and Try:
If you get rejected after successful submission, it’s okay. Don’t be frustrate. Do your level best and continue applying for jobs, until such time that a good client decides to hire you for your first project. Best of luck.
